Why I Created Estates & Trusts NJ
I created Estates & Trusts NJ because I know firsthand how much can land on your shoulders when you're responsible for an estate. I was the executor of my mother's estate before I ever became a real estate agent, and in the years since, I've helped other executors, trustees, and families across New Jersey deal with the questions and decisions that come with an estate, especially when a home is involved.
Where It Started
I became an executor before I became a real estate agent.
Before I became a real estate professional, I served as executor of my mother's estate. Like many executors, I stepped into the role at a time of loss, without having done anything quite like it before.
Cleaning out and eventually selling my mother's home with my sisters was a labor of love for us. But I also came to realize that administering an estate can become a management role of sorts. There were belongings to sort through, documents to find, accounts and expenses to address, a home to maintain, people to coordinate with, and decisions that had to be made, all while we were dealing with the loss of our mom.
What I Learned Since
Every estate is different.
Years later, after becoming a real estate professional, I found myself working with executors, trustees, and families dealing with estate and trust property. That experience has given me a much broader view of what families face.
Every situation is different. Some homes need very little before they can be sold. Others involve years of belongings, deferred maintenance, estate sales or cleanouts, family members in different places, questions about value and timing, title issues, or simply uncertainty about what should happen next.
I have also seen that the sale of a home is usually just one piece of a much larger responsibility. The person administering an estate may be coordinating attorneys, accountants, title professionals, appraisers, estate sale companies, cleanout services, organizers, contractors, government agencies, family members, and more. In many ways, the executor becomes the person responsible for keeping all of those moving parts moving.
I recognized many of those pressures because I had experienced them myself. But working with other executors and families showed me how many different forms those challenges can take.
Real estate might eventually be part of the job, but it is rarely the whole job.
Why I Built It
I thought there should be a better starting point.
That realization became the idea behind Estates & Trusts NJ: to create the kind of practical, New Jersey-specific starting point I would have found useful when I was administering my mother's estate, informed by what I have learned since from helping other families navigate their own estate and trust property decisions.
The goal is not to tell people that they need a team of professionals. Many executors and families handle a great deal themselves. The goal is to help people understand the process, find reliable information, recognize when a question requires specialized knowledge, and know where to turn when they do want help.
Estates & Trusts NJ is intended to be useful whether or not you ever need my real estate services.
If a property decision eventually becomes part of your responsibility, I am available to help. Until then, I hope the information here simply makes the road a little easier to understand.
