Residential real estate transactions in New Jersey commonly include an attorney review period. During this time, the contract may be reviewed, modified, negotiated, or disapproved by the parties' attorneys.
Accepting an offer is an important milestone, but it is not necessarily the end of negotiations. In New Jersey, most residential real estate contracts enter an attorney review period before becoming fully binding.
What is Attorney Review?
Attorney Review is a period during which the attorneys representing the buyer and seller may review the contract, suggest revisions, negotiate additional terms, or disapprove the agreement altogether. This process helps ensure that the contract reflects the interests of their respective clients.
Expect continued discussions
Even after an offer has been accepted, additional questions or requests may arise. Inspection provisions, closing dates, personal property, occupancy, and other contract terms are commonly discussed during attorney review.
Stay patient
It is normal for communication to continue during this stage. Attorney review is designed to resolve questions before the transaction moves forward into inspections, financing, and closing preparation.
